Can a single molecule trap the electron ? 1

چکیده
We suggest that it might be possible to trap the electron in a cavity of a macrocycle molecule, in the same way this trapping occurs cooperatively, by several solvent molecules, in hydroxylic liquids. Such an encapsulated electron is a ‘molecular capacitor,’ in which the excess electron is largely decoupled from valence electrons in the trap. A specific design for such a trap that is based on calix[4]cyclohexanol is discussed in detail. It is shown theoretically, by ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) modeling, that one of the conformations of this molecule forms the optimum tetrahedral trap for the electron. The resulting ‘encapsulated electron’ strikingly resembles the solvated electron in alcohols and water. ___________________________________________________________________________________ 1 Work performed under the auspices of the Office of Science, Division of Chemical Science, US-DOE under contract number W-31-109-ENG-38. * To whom correspondence should be addressed: Tel 630-252-9516, FAX 630-2524993, e-mail: [email protected].

Modeling and Simulation of a Molecular Single-Electron Transistor
In this paper, to understand the concept of coupling, molecule density of states that coupled to the metal electrodes will be explained then, based on this concept, a weak and strong coupling for the molecules attached to the metal electrodes will be described. Capacitance model is used to explore the connection of addition energy with the Electron affinity and the ionization energy of the mole...
متن کاملFirst Princiles Study of the Electron Transport Properties of Buthane-dithiol Nano-Molecular Wire
We report a first-principles study of electrical transport in a single molecular conductor consisting of a buthane-dithiol sandwiched between two Au (100) electrodes. We show that the current was increased by increasing of the external voltage biases. The projected density of states (PDOS) and transmission coefficients (T(E)) under various external voltage biases are analyzed, and it suggests t...
متن کاملThe Anti-Brownian ELectrophoretic Trap (ABEL Trap): Fabrication and Software
The Anti-Brownian ELectrophoretic trap (ABEL trap) is a new device that allows a user to trap and manipulate fluorescent objects as small as 20 nm freely diffusing in solution. We describe in detail how to build an ABEL trap. CHALLENGES IN NANOMANIPULATION One of the outstanding challenges of nanotechnology is to develop a means to trap and manipulate individual molecules in solution. To study ...
متن کاملMultiple Electron Ejection from Proteins Resulting from Single-Photon Excitation in the Valence Shell.
One-photon multiple ionization is a signature of dynamical electron correlations in atoms and small molecules, as observed in the Auger process when Auger electron emission follows core-shell ionization. In such a process, the high energy needed to remove several electrons is due to the strong Coulombic attraction between the last departing electron(s) and the ionic core. Multiply negatively ch...
متن کاملCharacterization of photoactivated singlet oxygen damage in single-molecule optical trap experiments.
Optical traps or "tweezers" use high-power, near-infrared laser beams to manipulate and apply forces to biological systems, ranging from individual molecules to cells. Although previous studies have established that optical tweezers induce photodamage in live cells, the effects of trap irradiation have yet to be examined in vitro, at the single-molecule level. In this study, we investigate trap...
